Course Overview
This one-day course is designed for outdoor leaders, instructors, teachers, expedition staff and volunteers responsible for the wellbeing of others in adventurous settings.
Delivered outdoors through guided walks, practical activities and discussion, you'll learn how to recognise psychological distress, provide appropriate early support, and respond confidently when someone is struggling. The course focuses on Psychological First Aid, communication, decision-making and creating psychologically safer outdoor experiences.
Suitable for anyone leading or supporting others in the outdoors who wants the confidence to respond when not all injuries can be seen.
You'll train through realistic scenarios covering:
- Recognising common signs of psychological distress
- Psychological First Aid principles and early support
- Effective communication and active listening
- Supporting individuals during challenging or traumatic incidents
- Managing the wider group while caring for an individual
- Professional boundaries, self-care and knowing when to seek additional help
- Building resilience and promoting psychological safety in adventurous settings

No. This course focuses on Psychological First Aid in outdoor and adventurous settings. It is designed to help leaders recognise psychological distress, provide appropriate early support, and understand when and how to signpost someone for further help.
