Why schools ask this question

Headteachers, trip leaders and compliance officers often ask:
“Does Outdoor First Aid count as workplace first aid for staff?”

The short answer is yes. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognises Outdoor First Aid (OFA) as equivalent to workplace first aid when it meets the right standards. That means schools don’t need to book two separate courses – OFA can cover both classroom compliance and off-site safety.

What the HSE actually says

The HSE requires employers (including schools) to:

Provide appropriate first aid cover for their workplace and activities.
Choose a course that is regulated and delivered by qualified providers.

Outdoor First Aid, when delivered at 16 hours over two days, meets these criteria. It’s nationally regulated, fully assessed, and includes the same workplace competencies as an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) course – with the added advantage of outdoor scenarios.

Why OFA makes sense for schools

Covers both classroom and outdoor learning – One certificate ensures compliance for staff in classrooms, on the playground, and on residential trips.
Cost-effective – Instead of booking two courses, one OFA course covers all requirements.
VAT reclaimable – Our training fees include VAT. Because schools can reclaim VAT, the true cost to your budget is lower than it first appears.
Practical scenarios – Teachers learn skills in real-life contexts (e.g. playground injuries, trips, forest school settings).
Regulated training – Certificates are HSE-recognised, valid for three years, and fully insured.
Future-proof – Meets inspection standards and reassures governors and parents alike.

A common scenario: school trips

Imagine a Year 8 geography trip to Snowdonia. Staff need to be confident handling both classroom medical incidents and emergencies on a hillside. With OFA, teachers don’t just know how to manage a faint in the science lab – they also know how to stabilise a lower leg injury on a remote path until help arrives.

That’s why many schools now choose Outdoor First Aid as their default staff training.
