On the 16th of August, I had the pleasure of working with the other regional Mountain Training Co-ordinators running a training day for Mountain Training Association members here in the Chiltern Hills. Coombe Hill, with its mix of woodland, rolling chalk escarpments and wide views across the Vale of Aylesbury, proved to be the perfect outdoor classroom.

The day was designed to bring together core skills that every outdoor leader should have in their toolkit: first aid, navigation, and local knowledge.
Lowland Hill Day MTA

🩺 First Aid: From BLS to Bleeding Control

We began the day with an interactive first aid session, focusing on the essentials for anyone working in remote environments.

Basic Life Support (BLS): We practised effective CPR, use of AEDs and casualty assessment in outdoor contexts where emergency services could be delayed.

Bleeding Control: Participants worked with realistic scenarios to manage severe bleeds and use pressure dressings β€” vital skills for anyone leading groups in remote settings.

Discussions around real-life experiences helped to bring home the importance of not just knowing the theory, but being confident enough to act under pressure.

🧭 Route Planning & Navigation

After lunch, we shifted focus to navigation skills, Led by Phillipa, Angelina and Abdul. Using OS maps and the varied terrain around Coombe Hill, they worked on route choice, contour interpretation and micro-navigation β€” all while considering group management.

We explored how to adapt plans in changing conditions, keeping both safety and enjoyment in mind. The Chiltern Hills may not be the Highlands, but they’re an excellent environment to sharpen decision-making skills and test navigation under canopy and low visibility.

🌿 Local Knowledge – Plants of the Chilterns

One of the highlights was exploring the plant life unique to the chalk downlands. From Juniper and ant hills, wild marjoram and thyme underfoot to the beech woodland ecology above, understanding the environment we operate in enriches the experience for clients and groups. Good job Phillipa, great knowledge.

As leaders, knowing a little natural history can transform a walk from a route march into a rich journey of discovery.
Lowland Leader Workshop Day
🀝 A Day of Shared Learning

What really stood out was the value of peer-to-peer learning. With such a diverse group of leaders, instructors, and volunteers, everyone brought something different to the table β€” from first aid experiences to clever navigation tips.

It was a fantastic reminder that days like this aren’t just about ticking CPD boxes, but about building confidence, community, and resilience as outdoor leaders.

πŸ“… Looking Ahead

Thanks to everyone who joined. The next regional event will be announced shortly, and I’d encourage anyone in the area to come along β€” whether to refresh your skills, share your knowledge, or simply enjoy a day outdoors with like-minded people.

If you’d like to know more about future events, or about outdoor first aid and skills training, get in touch.
