Most people spend more time choosing a waterproof jacket than thinking about hydration.
Yet dehydration will ruin your day far quicker than a leaky jacket.
Whether you're hiking in the Chilterns, climbing in Snowdonia, or spending a day teaching outdoors, hydration has a direct impact on your performance, decision-making and safety.
The problem is that hydration advice is often confusing.
One minute you're told to drink constantly.
The next you're being sold an electrolyte drink that costs more than your lunch.
The Human Body Is Mostly Water
The average adult is around 50–60% water.
Water helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, maintain blood volume and keep your brain functioning properly.
In simple terms, if you're dehydrated, everything becomes harder.
Your heart works harder.
Your muscles work harder.
Your brain works harder.
And if you've ever forgotten where you parked the car after a long day in the hills, dehydration may have played a part.
Research shows that losing as little as 2% of body weight through fluid loss can impair physical and cognitive performance. That's enough to affect concentration, decision-making and endurance.

Do You Need Electrolyte Drinks?
Sometimes.
Not always.
The sports industry would like you to believe you'll collapse without a brightly coloured drink containing seventeen ingredients you've never heard of.
The reality is less exciting.
For most day walks, normal meals and adequate water intake provide enough electrolytes.
Electrolyte supplements become more useful when:
Exercise lasts longer than 1–2 hours
Temperatures are high
Sweat losses are significant
Multiple days of activity are planned
You're recovering from illness involving vomiting or diarrhoea
Research suggests adding sodium during prolonged exercise can improve fluid retention and support performance.
The Hidden Danger: Drinking Too Much
Outdoor instructors often focus on dehydration.
But over-hydration can also be dangerous.
A condition called exercise-associated hyponatraemia occurs when people drink excessive amounts of water without replacing sodium.
This dilutes the body's sodium concentration and can lead to headaches, confusion, nausea and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications.
The old advice to "drink as much as possible" has largely disappeared.
Modern guidance is much simpler:
Drink regularly.
Drink to thirst.
Monitor how you're feeling.
Pay attention to urine colour.
Avoid both dehydration and excessive drinking.
Practical Hydration Tips for Outdoor People
Before Activity
Start hydrated.
Don't wait until you're on the trail to begin drinking.
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends beginning activity well hydrated and maintaining normal electrolyte levels before starting prolonged exercise.
During Activity
For most UK outdoor activities:
Drink little and often
Use thirst as a guide
Increase intake during hot weather
Eat regular snacks
Consider electrolytes for long, hot or demanding days
After Activity
Replace lost fluids gradually.
A useful indicator is urine colour:
Pale straw colour = generally well hydrated
Dark yellow = likely dehydrated
Completely clear all day = possibly drinking more than necessary
No, this doesn't mean comparing urine samples. Use common sense.
The First Aid Perspective
One of the reasons dehydration matters is that it can mimic or worsen other medical problems.
A dehydrated casualty may appear tired, dizzy, confused or generally unwell.
Heat illness, exhaustion, gastrointestinal illness and prolonged physical exertion can all contribute to fluid and electrolyte losses.
Recognising dehydration early is often far easier than managing the consequences later.
Like many aspects of first aid, prevention beats treatment.

Hydration isn't complicated.
Most outdoor people don't need expensive supplements, specialist powders or the latest influencer-approved hydration system.
What they do need is a simple plan.
Start hydrated.
Drink regularly.
Eat normally.
Replace electrolytes when conditions justify it.
And remember:
The goal isn't to drink as much as possible.
The goal is to stay capable, make good decisions and enjoy the day.
Because nobody has ever reached a summit and said:
"I wish I'd carried another litre of fluorescent raspberry electrolyte potion."
