Standards, Evidence & Medical Governance
How Invenio Training designs, reviews and delivers outdoor first aid that stands up in real environments.
Why standards matter outdoors
First aid beyond the classroom
Outdoor and remote environments demand more than box-ticking compliance. When help is delayed, conditions are harsh, and decisions matter, training must be grounded in current evidence, realistic scenarios and sound judgement.
This page explains the standards, guidance and principles that inform how our courses are designed and delivered.
Evidence-informed practice
Training guided by recognised best practice
We love to learn, and the best way to learn is to share. Our courses are evidence-informed, drawing on guidance and thinking from recognised organisations including the Wilderness Medical Society, alongside UK and international best practice.
This means:
Teaching principles, not just protocols
Encouraging critical thinking and risk-based decision-making
Adapting care to environment, resources and time to evacuation
We focus on why decisions are made, not just what to do.
UK recognition & compliance
Recognised, regulated where required, and relevant to real environments
Invenio Training delivers both quality-assured and regulated qualifications, depending on the level of training and your requirements. Both meet the standards recommended by the Health and Safety Executive.
Our regulated programmes (IREC and FREC) are delivered through Ofqual-recognised awarding organisations and are accepted across the UK where a regulated pre-hospital qualification is required.
Our 16-hour Outdoor First Aid course is quality assured through an external quality assured certification body, aligned with the Institute for Outdoor Learning, meets the Forest School Association guidelines, and is widely recognised within the outdoor sector, it is accepted by the HSE, employers, outdoor centres and National Governing Bodies.
Invenio Training Ltd holds appropriate medical malpractice, professional liability and commercial insurance for all courses delivered.
Where additional outdoor or sector-specific expectations exist, our training is designed to meet or exceed them.
Real-world delivery & review
Built on experience, not theory
Our training is shaped by:
Instructors with backgrounds in outdoor leadership, rescue and medical care
Scenario-based learning that reflects real incidents
Regular review and updating of content to reflect evolving guidance
We do not teach to the minimum. We teach for the environments our learners actually work and adventure in.
What this means for you
Practical confidence, not just a certificate
Training with Invenio means:
Realistic scenarios you’ll recognise
Current, evidence-informed guidance
Confidence to make decisions when plans change
Skills that transfer beyond the syllabus
Whether you’re an outdoor professional, educator or adventurer, our aim is the same: calm, competent action when it matters.
“I recently attended the 16 hour outdoor first aid course with Bruce. This is the 6th one of these courses that I have attended, all previous ones were with various providers. I can honestly say this one was hands down the best course I have attended by a long way. Bruce has exceptional knowledge and real world experience of the subject matter and provided a really practical and hands on approach to teaching first aid. I highly recommend this course to new and experienced first aiders. Thanks Bruce, I will be back!”
