I'm Bruce Petty — outdoor instructor, Emergency Medical Technician and someone with a lifelong passion for adventure and the outdoors.
My love of adventure started young with an obsession with horses. I was fortunate enough to attend boarding school in North Wales, where Snowdonia (Eryri) was quite literally on my doorstep. Challenge, adventure and time in the hills quickly became part of everyday life.
I served for nine years in the British Army and six years in the Home Office before moving into outdoor education full time. Alongside my work, I pursued interests in mountaineering, horse riding, skydiving and mountain biking, eventually qualifying as an outdoor instructor.
Holding qualifications including Mountain Leader (ML), Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI), Mountain Bike Instructor and Power Boat Level 2, I went on to work for Outward Bound as an Instructor. I later became a Head of Centre, a member of AHOEC and AAIAC, and eventually Lecturer and Head of Department for Outdoor Education and Sport at a local college.
Over the years I have taught adventure activities and safety skills to independent, grammar, state and international schools, alongside training outdoor professionals, instructors and adventurous individuals. In the UK, Europe and Nepal.
I later served as a Director of BAHA, now BAPA, and contributed to the development of Adventuremark, working alongside colleagues from across the outdoor sector to promote quality and standards in outdoor education.
While living in the Lake District, I volunteered with Langdale & Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team. This sparked a deeper interest in emergency and pre-hospital care and led to further training and work in ambulance and primary care settings.
Today, I teach full-time through Invenio Training. I continue to maintain my clinical competencies, work occasional ambulance shifts and spend one day each week working in primary care within a GP surgery.
My career has taken me from the Army to the Home Office, outdoor education, Mountain Rescue, healthcare, safety management and safeguarding leadership. Throughout, one thing has remained constant:
Helping people prepare for challenges, make good decisions and return home safely.
I believe in learning through experience and practising what I teach. Training should be practical, evidence-informed and grounded in real-world situations — building confidence, judgement and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
I am married with two amazing young children, Joe and Flo. We live in the Chilterns and spend as much time outdoors as possible. I still enjoy adventure, especially when I can share it with my family.
