About Invenio Training

Outdoor, Adventure and Equestrian First Aid — Built for Real Environments

Based in the South East, with venues across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire, Invenio Training provides outdoor and equestrian first aid for people who work, teach and play beyond immediate help.

We train outdoor professionals, schools, horse riders, forestry workers, instructors and adventurers to manage medical emergencies where conditions are challenging, resources are limited and decisions matter.

Our focus is simple:
Confidence built through challenge. Competence built through experience. Calm decision-making when it counts.

Why This Work Matters

You're the first link in the chain of survival

First aid is not about fixing everything. It is about buying time to get seriously injured or unwell people to definitive care.

As a first aider, you are the first link in the chain of survival. Your decisions and actions buy time and save lives.

First aid should be simple, not complicated. Because when you are faced with someone’s worst day, you do not want to be overthinking — you need to act. You need to stay calm, make decisions and lead others effectively under pressure.

Accidents are sudden. Unplanned. And often far from immediate help — whether that’s on a hillside, a riverbank or in the Chiltern Hills.

You may never face that situation.
But if you do, your actions — and your judgement — will matter.

That responsibility — and the belief that people grow through challenge, experience and good training — underpins everything we teach.

What We Do

Incidents don’t happen in classrooms

They happen on hillsides, forests, fields and yards — when people are tired, distracted and often responsible for others.

Our courses are practical, scenario-led and built around learning through experience in real environments wherever possible, focusing on:

Outdoor and wilderness first aid
Equestrian first aid for riders, instructors and yard staff
Decision-making and leadership under pressure
Psychological first aid and human factors
Prolonged care when help is delayed

You don’t rise to the level of your expectations.
You fall to the level of your training.

Who You’re Learning From

I’m Bruce Petty — outdoor instructor, practising healthcare professional, and someone with a lifelong passion for horses, both professionally and personally.

My love of adventure started at boarding school in North Wales. With Snowdonia (Eryri) on my doorstep, challenge, adventure and time in the hills became part of everyday life.

I was always looking to broaden my experiences. During my time in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, I took every opportunity to try new things, including sailing on a round-the-world yacht. After leaving the Army and joining the Home Office, I had more time to pursue my interests in mountaineering, horse riding, skydiving and mountain biking.

Alongside my work with the Home Office, I trained as an outdoor instructor. Holding qualifications including Mountain Leader (ML), Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI), Mountain Bike Leadership, Bushcraft and canoe instructor, I went on to work for Outward Bound as a Senior Instructor. I later became a Head of Centre, a member of AHOEC and AAIAC, and eventually a Lecturer and Head of Department at a local college. I still instruct in a part-time capacity.

While living in the Lake District, I volunteered with the Langdale & Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team. This sparked a deeper interest in emergency and pre-hospital care. I realised early on that first aid matters — but my mountain rescue experience took that understanding to another level. I later worked for South Central Ambulance Service after training with ORMS in North Wales.

Today, I teach full-time through Invenio Training. I also volunteer with a Critical Care Team, continue to maintain my clinical competencies, work occasional ambulance shifts, and spend one day each week working in primary care within a GP surgery.

I strongly believe in learning through experience and practising what I teach, ensuring training remains relevant, practical and grounded in real-world situations — not just theory or social media videos. Good training should build confidence, judgement and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

I still enjoy adventurous activities, continue to instruct, and ride whenever the opportunity arises.

I recently attended the 16 hour outdoor first aid course with Bruce. This is the 6th one of these courses that I have attended, all previous ones were with various providers. I can honestly say this one was hands down the best course I have attended by a long way. Bruce has exceptional knowledge and real world experience of the subject matter and provided a really practical and hands on approach to teaching first aid. I highly recommend this course to new and experienced first aiders. Thanks Bruce, I will be back!”
